How to value or sell Diecast Cars

"How much is my toy car worth?"

This is the one question that I get asked more often than any other.

Valuing diecast toys is one of the most subjective tasks you can undertake. Because most cars are damaged you need to assess how bad the damage is against how popular that model car might be.

Matchbox, Dinky and Corgi Toys made before 1970 are generally considered to be the most valuable. Pre-war Dinky toys, first-issue Matchbox Superfast, Gerry Anderson models, and the classic Corgi 267 Batmobile are all worth more when found in mint condition in their original boxes.

Reproduction boxes provide storage and give display value. Repaired models provide enjoyment where originals are too expensive.

In the past restored models held less value, but I think this will change in coming years. After all a restored 1:1 scale (real vehicles) is generally valued higher than an un-restored example; a high percentage of the original manufactured quantities of pre-1970 diecast are either damaged or destroyed; and there is simply a limited number of mint boxed items for an increasing market of collectors.

Collectors are increasingly turning to restored models to complete their collections. As a result your damaged models can still be worth something for restoration.

To value your items, start by taking some photos. If you know the models then make a list and email me the pictures and /or the list of your diecast toys. I'll try tp help with an estimate of their worth. Use the Contact Us form from the left menu.

RecoverToy News

Back in June I decided that it would be best if I announced the closure of RecoverToy store for a period of 3 months while I did some travelling for my other work commitments. It actually took 4 months but I am now back and hopefully settled here in Melbourne for the forseeable future.

This of course means that I have some time for my hobby of model cars and a chance to catch up on orders and repairs. However, I don't plan on officially re-opening the online store until the new year.

If you do place an order, please don't expect that it will be despatched instantly, as there are around 100 orders already ahead of you and it could be some time before I get to yours. That said, I will be cleaning up the outstanding emails in the coming weeks and will at least advise on availability of stock and responding to queries.

If you are reading this then you will know that RecoverToy is back on line. So what happened in the last week? The domain name of RecoverToy.com was due for renewal and in the process of renewing there was an error in communication somewhere which resulted in the domain not being renewed and not being renewable....

Which left me with no email and no website. For anyone who has sent email in the last 6 days or so, your emails will most likely be processed through to me in the next 24 - 48 hours. Email is retried over a period of time. If you have had a message to say that your email was undeliverable please resend it.

For everyone trying to contact RecoverToy please wait for a couple of days while I catch up on the backlog of mail that is coming through now and I hope to address all queries during this coming week.

Please note that I do only have Sundays generally as hobby time and while I try to get everything done in a day, somethings will have to be left for next weekend.

In order to catch up with outstanding orders and restorations I am closing the RecoverToy web store from this coming Saturday 13th June 2009 for a few months.

I will be conducting a sale of a large range of empty original boxes, stock of repro boxes, models for restoration and surplus items from my collection. This sale will be on eBay under the RecoverToy_USA store.

All current orders will be fulfilled over the next few weeks as time permits.

Thanks to all my customers and collecting friends for your support and I look forward to catching up with you again in the future.

Given the large volume of orders coming through the store and a general lack of time for me to support the collecting community I have closed my two eBay stores for an indefinite period. All outstanding eBay transactions will be finalised this week. Hopefully I will catch up on all the store orders over the next two weeks.

I have had a major melt-down with one of my computers. I've spent most of this week recovering all my data files for RecoverToy. Despite having backups most of my auction and sales information became corrupted.

I have it all recovered now but still need to sort and date and this will take me another couple of days. Hopefully by the weekend I'll be back on track and will get back to doing orders instead of file maintenance.
